The Lyman-alpha forest catalog from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument Early Data Release
This publication presents and validates measurements of Lyman-alpha forest fluctuations in the first data release of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). To accomplish this, the continua of DESI quasars are fitted not only in the Lyman-alpha forest region but also in featureless regions redward of the Lyman-alpha emission line, which are used for calibration. The figure shows the observed flux (black) of a high signal-to-noise DESI quasar. The coloured lines indicate the expected flux in each region (quasar continuum corrected by the mean absorption), for the Lyman-alpha forest region and for the Si IV, C IV, and C III calibration regions. For this publication, we follow the procedures developed for SDSS analyses and introduce the necessary adaptations for the DESI pipeline. In addition, we improve the weighting scheme, resulting in an improvement of more than 20% in the precision of the correlation function measurement.
